Virgin Islands Fugitive Captured at Alabama Workplace After Months on the Run

PRATTVILLE, Ala. – A St. Croix man wanted since February on weapons-related charges in the U.S. Virgin Islands has been captured at his workplace in Alabama, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Luis Ventura was arrested Sept. 11 in Prattville by members of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. Authorities said he was taken into custody without incident.

Ventura is wanted by the Virgin Islands Police Department on charges of first-degree reckless endangerment and possession of a deadly weapon during a crime of violence.

Authorities did not provide details about the incident that led to the charges.

The Virgin Islands Police Department requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force on June 16 after efforts to locate Ventura.

Investigators subsequently determined Ventura had been living in South Texas before relocating to Prattville.

The Virgin Islands task force contacted the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force in Montgomery on Sept. 9. Two days later, task force members located Ventura at his place of employment and arrested him.

Ventura was taken to the Montgomery County Jail, where he is being held pending extradition to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“Persons committing crimes in the Virgin Islands and fleeing the territory cannot outrun the long arm of the law,” U.S. Marshal Kwesi R. Howard of the District of the Virgin Islands said in announcing the arrest.
