MONTGOMERY, Ala. — As Alabama prepares to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is urging motorists and boaters to make safety a priority during what is expected to be one of the busiest Fourth of July travel periods on record.
ALEA officials said Troopers and Special Agents will have an increased presence across the state throughout the holiday, focusing on enforcement efforts designed to reduce crashes and save lives.
“Independence Day is one of the most meaningful celebrations of our nation’s history, and this year’s 250th anniversary makes it even more special,” ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said. “As families come together across Alabama to celebrate, we want everyone to enjoy the holiday safely and responsibly. One poor decision, whether behind the wheel or behind the helm, can quickly turn a celebration into tragedy. Our message is simple: celebrate freedom but do so responsibly.”
On Alabama’s roadways, ALEA will participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Troopers will focus enforcement on impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and seat belt violations.
ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division will also join the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for Operation Dry Water, a nationwide campaign aimed at preventing boating under the influence. Troopers will conduct increased patrols on Alabama’s lakes, rivers, and coastal waterways throughout the holiday weekend.
“Alabama’s lakes, rivers and coastal waters will see heavy traffic during the Fourth of July holiday, especially as we celebrate this historic milestone for our nation,” said Colonel Jonathan Archer, director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety. “ALEA Troopers will be out in full force working alongside our partners to enforce BUI laws, educate the public and ensure everyone can safely enjoy Alabama’s waterways.”
ALEA encourages travelers to follow these safety tips during the holiday:
Roadway Safety
- Never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- Designate a sober driver or arrange alternate transportation.
- Always wear a seat belt.
- Obey speed limits and traffic laws.
- Avoid distracted driving.
- Expect heavier-than-normal traffic and allow extra travel time.
Boating Safety
- Never operate a boat while impaired.
- Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
- Make sure required safety equipment is onboard and operational.
- File a float plan and let someone know your itinerary.
- Monitor weather conditions before and during your trip.
- Maintain a proper lookout and operate at safe speeds.
ALEA said its “Safe Roads. Safe Waters. Safe Fourth.” campaign is intended to remind everyone that the best way to celebrate Independence Day is by making responsible decisions that ensure everyone returns home safely.
