BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A former Birmingham police officer has been arrested on multiple felony sex crime charges following an investigation into allegations involving a juvenile, authorities announced Thursday.
Gregory Thompson, 38, of Center Point, was arrested and charged with First-Degree Rape, Traveling to Meet a Child for an Unlawful Sex Act and First-Degree Sexual Abuse.
According to the Birmingham Police Department, the alleged offenses occurred in 2026 within Jefferson County.
The criminal investigation was conducted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
On July 30, members of the Birmingham Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) took Thompson into custody without incident.
He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
Thompson joined the Birmingham Police Department in 2018. Before his arrest, he resigned from the department and is no longer employed by the City of Birmingham, officials said.
In a statement, the Birmingham Police Department said it remains committed to transparency, accountability and maintaining the public’s trust.
“No individual is above the law, and allegations of criminal conduct involving any employee are taken seriously and addressed through the appropriate legal process,” the department said.
Officials said the Birmingham Police Department will continue cooperating fully with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office as the case proceeds through the judicial process.
The investigation remains ongoing.
