MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A longstanding community landmark in West Montgomery is preparing for a major transformation as city leaders move forward with plans to renovate and expand the historic Fairview Farmers Market.
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed announced on June 1, 2026, that the market, located at 60 Fairview Avenue, will undergo a significant renovation as part of the Fairview Avenue Master Plan and the city’s broader strategy to revitalize West Montgomery.
For decades, the Fairview Farmers Market has served as a gathering place for residents, local farmers, and small businesses, providing access to fresh produce and locally sourced goods while strengthening community connections.
City officials said the project will modernize and expand the facility while preserving its historic role within the community.
“The farmers market is important because it brings about fresh food options for residents who don’t have some of the opportunities for the type of food and the type of wellness that we’d like to see them have here in the city,” Mayor Reed said during the announcement.
The renovation is expected to take approximately 18 months and is designed to position the market as a catalyst for future economic development and business growth along the Fairview Avenue corridor.
Mayor Reed emphasized that West Montgomery remains a key focus of the city’s investment efforts.
“We want businesses and investors to know that West Montgomery is open and that we are going to continue to invest here and we want them to continue to invest and partner with us,” Reed said.
The farmers market project is the latest in a series of public investments aimed at revitalizing the area.
Recent projects include a $19 million fire station, a new transit station, and extensive improvements along West Fairview Avenue.
A separate $9 million infrastructure project, launched in 2024, has already brought upgraded drainage systems, new sidewalks, landscaping improvements, updated traffic signals, and roadway enhancements intended to improve safety and accessibility for residents and businesses.
Montgomery City Council members Franetta Riley and Andrew Szymanski praised the progress being made throughout the corridor.
“Now we see progress. My grounds are revived, rejuvenated, and restructured,” Riley said.
Szymanski added that the community will continue to see significant changes over the coming months.
“Over the next 18 months, we’re going to get to watch as Fairview is truly transformed into a viable commercial corridor which this area desperately needs,” he said.
City officials said the project reflects a long-term vision for preserving the area’s history while creating new opportunities for economic growth and community engagement.
The renovation is being supported by local partners, including DuBose Construction Company and Goodwyn Mills Cawood, with leaders noting that much of the investment will remain within Alabama and support jobs and economic activity across the state.
Once completed, the revitalized Fairview Farmers Market is expected to continue serving as a centerpiece of the community, providing a space where residents can gather, support local businesses, and access fresh food for years to come.
