HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville police say an early morning shooting that left an armed intruder critically injured appears to have been an act of self-defense.
According to the Huntsville Police Department, officers responded around 3 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, to a reported shooting at a residence in the 200 block of Salem Drive.
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The preliminary investigation by the department’s Violent Crimes Unit determined the injured man had allegedly unlawfully entered the home while armed with a firearm.
Investigators said the man threatened the occupants inside the residence before one of the residents fired a weapon in self-defense.
The case was presented to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Based on the evidence currently available, the District Attorney’s Office agreed the shooting appears to have been an act of self-defense. Police said no charges are anticipated against the resident who fired the weapon.
The injured man remains under investigation for possible first-degree burglary charges. Authorities said formal charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
Until charges are filed, the Huntsville Police Department will not release the man’s identity.
