Arizona Man Arrested in Fatal East Birmingham Shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — An Arizona man has been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with a fatal shooting in East Birmingham over the Fourth of July weekend.

According to the Birmingham Police Department, 36-year-old Dontrell Bennett of Glendale, Arizona, has been charged with Capital Murder in the death of 41-year-old Dennis Collins.

The shooting occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, in the 100 block of 69th Place North.

Following what police described as an extensive investigation, Birmingham Police Department’s Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT), assisted by the Montgomery Police Department’s SWAT Team and Gang Unit, located Bennett at a short-term rental property in Montgomery.

Authorities said Bennett was taken into custody without incident.

He was transported to Birmingham and booked into the Jefferson County Jail, where he is being held without bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.
