CALERA, Ala. — A wanted Chilton County man was arrested after leading Calera police on a brief pursuit that began when officers spotted him running a stop sign on a scooter.
According to the Calera Police Department, day shift patrol officers had been actively searching for the fugitive when they observed him commit the traffic violation.
Police said the suspect attempted to flee by accelerating on the scooter before leaving the roadway, driving behind a house, and into a planted field.
The pursuit came to an end when the suspect crashed the scooter and ran a short distance on foot before officers took him into custody.
The department joked in a social media post, “We’re thankful that he didn’t have a skateboard on him or the chase might have continued.”
Investigators said the suspect, who is from Chilton County, had four active failure-to-appear warrants, including two for retail theft and two for previously attempting to elude law enforcement.
Calera Police Chief David Hyche said repeat offenders continue to place a burden on law enforcement and the community.
“Law enforcement continues to deal with the same people over and over,” Hyche said. “Career criminals with no regard for the law, other people’s property or the safety of the community need to be properly held accountable.”
Hyche also praised his officers for their proactive efforts to locate wanted suspects.
“Our folks are extremely busy, but our goal is to make Calera as uncomfortable as possible for criminals,” he said. “Career criminals belong in jail.”
