Fort Payne Police Arrest Oxford Man in Double Homicide at Alabama Avenue Apartment

Fort Payne, AL – Two people were killed Sunday evening in a shooting at the Fort Payne Housing Authority Complex, and a 27-year-old Oxford man has been charged with capital murder in connection with their deaths.

At 5:59 p.m. on November 9, 2025, Fort Payne Police received a 911 call reporting shots fired in the 1300 block of Alabama Avenue NW. When officers arrived, they found two victims inside the kitchen area of an apartment suffering from gunshot wounds.

Officers secured the scene and provided medical aid until emergency responders arrived, but life-saving efforts were unsuccessful. The victims were identified as Alisha Nichole Keller, 27, and Logan Cordale Brown, 24, both of Fort Payne.

A preliminary investigation identified Jacob Eugene Mitchum, 27, of Oxford, as the suspect. Investigators learned that Mitchum had fled the scene and was believed to be returning to Oxford.

With the assistance of the Oxford Police Department, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, and the East Metro Area Crime Center (EMACC), Mitchum was located and arrested without incident. He was transported back to Fort Payne, where he was charged with Capital Murder and denied bond. Mitchum will be transferred to the DeKalb County Detention Center.

The Fort Payne Police Department extended its appreciation to the partnering agencies for their swift coordination and response, including the Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics, which assisted with the investigation.

Officials clarified that no children were present during the shooting and that no prior threats or warnings had been reported to Fort Payne Police before the incident.

The department reiterated its commitment to combating domestic violence, urging the public to seek help if they or someone they know is in danger.

“Domestic violence is a serious crime that impacts entire families and communities,” the department said in a statement. “Our officers are trained to respond swiftly, investigate thoroughly, and connect victims with the resources they need to stay safe.”
