LEE COUNTY, Alabama – The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an Opelika man following an investigation into alleged aggravated animal cruelty after deputies found multiple dogs living in poor conditions in the Beauregard community.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were contacted on January 24, 2026, around 7:23 p.m. CST regarding possible animal cruelty in the 1700 block of Lee Road 400. When deputies arrived, they located approximately 16 dogs that appeared malnourished and without access to adequate food or water.
Investigators responded to the scene and obtained a search warrant for the property. During the search, all 16 dogs, described as pit bull–type dogs, were seized. The animals were transported by Lee County Animal Control to a veterinary clinic in Opelika for evaluation.
On January 25, 2026, a veterinarian advised investigators that all of the dogs were in poor health and showed signs they had not been regularly cared for.
The owner of the dogs, Mose Washington Jr., 65, of Opelika, was arrested and charged with 16 felony counts of Aggravated Animal Cruelty. Bond was set at $80,000.
