Birmingham CrossPlex Unveils First-Ever KultureCity Sensory Pod

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— The Birmingham CrossPlex has taken a significant step towards greater accessibility with the installation of its first-ever KultureCity Sensory Pod. This dedicated quiet space is designed to provide a sanctuary for individuals with sensory sensitivities, marking a major achievement for the venue and Mayor Woodfin’s initiative to create more inclusive public spaces in the city.

KultureCity, a Birmingham-founded nonprofit, is dedicated to making spaces accessible for individuals with invisible disabilities like autism, PTSD, dementia, and sensory processing disorders. Their comprehensive approach includes training staff, providing sensory bags with tools like noise-canceling headphones, and certifying venues as sensory-inclusive.

Birmingham has a history of leading in sensory-friendly initiatives. Notable examples include sensory rooms at Boutwell Auditorium, the BJCC, Protective Stadium, and the Coca-Cola Amphitheater’s certification as a sensory-inclusive venue.

The new sensory pod at the CrossPlex, a venue known for its athletic facilities like the Bill Harris Arena, Indoor Track-Volleyball Arena, and Olympic-size Pool, is particularly impactful. It ensures that athletes and visitors with sensory sensitivities can now confidently utilize the CrossPlex without fear of overwhelm. This initiative aligns with other city projects, such as the Sensory Inclusive Hub at the Powell Avenue Steam Plant, aiming to establish Birmingham as a national leader in disability inclusion.

The 2025 KultureCity Ball, an annual gala, will further promote acceptance and inclusion, raising funds for programs supporting individuals with sensory needs.
